But lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students faced inimitable challenges. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2021\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Seventy percent of LGBTQ+ young people<\/a> ages 13 to 24 said that their mental health was poor during COVID-19. And nearly half of LGBTQ+ students said they wanted counseling but were unable to receive it. These facts speak to the resiliency of LGBTQ youth \u2014 and serve as an urgent call to action.<\/p><p>According to the Postsecondary National Policy Institute (PNPI), students who identify as LGBTQ+ comprise an estimated <a href=\"http:\/\/pnpi.org\/LGBTQ+-students-in-higher-education\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">10% of the college population<\/a> \u2014 approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/covid-19-college-students\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2.5 million LGBTQ+ young adults<\/a> ages 18 to 24. The growing acceptance of those who identify as LGBTQ+ in America is encouraging more students to come out. In a 2019 Pew Research poll, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/fact-sheet\/changing-attitudes-on-gay-marriage\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">61% of Americans supported<\/a> same-sex marriage while only 31% opposed it \u2014 a change that&#8217;s developed in recent decades. Additionally, 74% of millennials and 58% of Gen Xers who participated in the poll approved of same-sex marriage.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-challenges-do-lgbtq-college-students-face\"><\/span>What challenges do LGBTQ+ college students face?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>While LGBTQ+ college students have enjoyed greater inclusion in recent years, significant challenges remain. The Trevor Project\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/mental-health\/trevor-project-research-lgbtq-youth#Not-so-typical-coming-of-age-experiences\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2021 National Survey on LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health<\/a> sheds light on many of these challenges by capturing the experiences of nearly 35,000 LGBTQ+ youth ages 13 to 24.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c831a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c831a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"gender-discrimination\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Gender discrimination<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-dce-advanced-background-color=\"#E2E3E4\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac451e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac451e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>75% of LGBTQ+ youth report that they experienced discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity at least once in their lifetime. Thirteen percent reported being subjected to conversion therapy \u2014 83% reporting it occurred under the age of 18.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74989cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74989cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"racial-discrimation\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Racial discrimation<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-dce-advanced-background-color=\"#E2E3E4\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-143c04c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"143c04c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>50% of LGBTQ+ youth of color reported discrimination based on their ethnicity in the past year, including 67% of black LGBTQ+ youth and 60% of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b34e5ba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b34e5ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"suicide-ideation\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Suicide ideation<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-dce-advanced-background-color=\"#E2E3E4\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67bcd93 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67bcd93\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t42% of LGBTQ+ youth considered attempting suicide. In a closer look at LGBTQ+ youth who attempted suicide, non-White LGBTQ+ youth were more likely to have attempted suicide than White LGBTQ+ youth. The survey revealed that 12% of White LGBTQ+ youth attempted suicide compared to 31% of Native\/Indigenous youth, 21% of Black youth, 21% of multiracial youth, 18% of Latinx youth, and 12% of AAPI youth.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d40386e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d40386e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"negative-politics\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Negative politics<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-dce-advanced-background-color=\"#E2E3E4\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59b21a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"59b21a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t94% of LGBTQ+ youth reported that recent politics negatively impacted their mental health and well-being.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-670c792 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"670c792\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"food-insecurity\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Food insecurity<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-dce-advanced-background-color=\"#E2E3E4\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39bed13 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39bed13\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t30% of LGBTQ+ youth experienced food insecurity in the past month, including half of all Native\/Indigenous LGBTQ+ youth.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3767e7d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3767e7d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"sexual-harrassment\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Sexual harrassment<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-dce-advanced-background-color=\"#E2E3E4\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e011bcd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e011bcd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tA recent survey by the Association of American Universities revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2015\/09\/campus-sexual-assault-lgbt-students\/406684\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">three in four LGBTQ+ college students experienced sexual harassment<\/a> at least once in their lifetime. Additionally, 9% of LGBTQ+ respondents were victims of rape that entailed either force or incapacitation, compared to 7% of heterosexual women.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-54002ce elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"54002ce\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5480ce3 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"5480ce3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d899f5b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d899f5b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to these challenges, LGBTQ+ people are at higher risk of certain health conditions, have less access to health care, and experience worse health outcomes.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Behavioral Health<\/strong> &#8211; LGBTQ+ people are at greater risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts, mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol, tobacco, and substance use, and substance abuse.<\/li><li><strong>Physical Health Disparities<\/strong><ul><li>Lesbian and bisexual women have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whijournal.com\/article\/S1049-3867(04)00018-0\/abstract\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">higher rates of breast cancer<\/a>, and both transgender men and women are at greater risk.<\/li><li>LGBTQ+ people have <a href=\"https:\/\/cancer-network.org\/cancer-information\/hpv-and-cancer\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">higher rates of HPV infection<\/a>. Lesbian and bisexual women are at higher risk for cervical cancer, and gay and bisexual men may have a higher risk of anal cancer.<\/li><li>LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be obese.<\/li><li>Gay and bisexual men are more likely to have HIV\/AIDS than cisgender men.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Access to Care<\/strong> &#8211; LGBTQ+ people have less access to necessary mental health care. They are also:<ul><li>Less likely to have health insurance.<\/li><li>Less likely to fill prescriptions.<\/li><li>More likely to use the emergency room or delay getting care.<\/li><li>More likely to be refused health care services and be harassed by health care providers and mental health providers.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ce366e elementor-cta--layout-image-right elementor-cta--skin-classic elementor-animated-content elementor-widget elementor-widget-call-to-action\" data-id=\"1ce366e\" class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>A new study from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law conducted in collaboration with the Point Foundation found that COVID-19 impacted the educational opportunities, financial security, and housing stability of an <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/one-third-of-lgbtq-college-students-experienced-housing-disruption-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">estimated 3.4 million<\/a> LGBTQ+ students ages 18 to 40.<\/p><p>Results also show that 39% of all students, and 65% of transgender youth and nonbinary youth, reported that their ability to pursue their studies was worse than before the pandemic. And, 33% of all students experienced a financial disruption, such as loss of financial aid, jobs, internships, or financial support from family members. LGBTQ+ students were twice as likely to have lost student housing than non-LGBTQ+ students \u2014 15% vs 6%. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/mental-health\/trevor-project-research-lgbtq-youth#The-difficulty-in-getting-aid\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">80% of LGBTQ+ youth stated<\/a> that COVID-19 made their living situation more stressful \u2014 and only one in three LGBTQ+ youth found their home to be LGBTQ-affirming.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2b284b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2b284b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-support-services-are-available-for-lgbtq-students\"><\/span>What support services are available for LGBTQ+ students?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>No student should ever have to experience discrimination or negative behavior, regardless of their sexual orientation. This becomes increasingly important as young people begin to think about college. A recent report found that nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accreditedschoolsonline.org\/resources\/lgbtq-student-support\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">14% of LGBTQ+ students<\/a> who receive frequent verbal harassment decide not to go to college.<\/p><p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/responding-to-change-5-considerations-for-college-leaders\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">higher education leaders are working<\/a> on behalf of LGBTQ+ young people, and it\u2019s making a difference: LGBTQ+ students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higheredtoday.org\/2017\/04\/10\/lgbtq-students-higher-education\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">feel a stronger sense of inclusion and safety<\/a> in college than when they were in high school. GSAs provide a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ students and those perceived by others to be LGBTQ+, questioning their identity, having LGBTQ+ friends or family, or just caring about LGBTQ issues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glsen.org\/research\/2019-national-school-climate-survey\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Research shows<\/a> that LGBTQ+ students hear fewer homophobic slurs, experience less harassment, have better attendance, and feel safer at schools that have GSAs.<\/p><h5 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-stand-against-homophobia\"><\/span>4. Stand against homophobia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">LGBTQ-inclusive lessons and discussions are best introduced in a supportive school environment.
