And, at approximately 60 million, native-born American members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialexplorer.com\/blog\/post\/social-explorer-on-generation-z-in-the-ny-times-5036\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Gen Z outnumber millennials<\/a> by nearly one million. This means diversity in healthcare providers for college students is more important than ever.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-more-diverse-college-student-population\"><\/span>A more diverse college student population<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2018\/11\/15\/early-benchmarks-show-post-millennials-on-track-to-be-most-diverse-best-educated-generation-yet\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Nearly half of 6 to 21-year-old Gen Zers<\/a> are traditionally underrepresented or ethnic minorities, compared with 39% of Millennials in that age bracket in 2002, and more than double the percentage of early Baby Boomers in 1968. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2020\/05\/14\/on-the-cusp-of-adulthood-and-facing-an-uncertain-future-what-we-know-about-gen-z-so-far-2\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">One in four Gen Zers is Hispanic and Latino<\/a> &#8212; significantly higher than the Hispanic and Latino share of Millennials in 2002. The percentage of Asians is up from 4% to 6%, while 14% of the group are Black.<\/p><p>Gen Z students are also on track to become the most educated generation. They have higher high school graduation rates and lower dropout rates than those who came before. In 2018, 57% of 18 to 21-year olds were in college, compared with 52% of Millennials, and 43% of Gen Xers at similar ages.<\/p><p>As for Gen Z\u2019s well-being, mental illness is a true struggle. One report found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/stress\/2018\/stress-gen-z.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">91% of Gen Z said they have experienced physical or emotional symptoms<\/a> due to stress. And <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/new-data-college-students-demand-for-virtual-mental-health-care-quadruples\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">TimelyCare&#8217;s research shows that demand for mental health services<\/a> continues to grow.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-a-lack-of-healthcare-provider-diversity-can-affect-higher-education\"><\/span>How a lack of healthcare provider diversity can affect higher education<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>When students can\u2019t find primary care health providers who resemble them, their beliefs, and their culture, it can prevent them from achieving health equity and getting the health outcomes and care they need. But how does that manifest on college and university campuses? Of those, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/mental-illness.shtml\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">17% reported having a mental illness<\/a> in the past year. That\u2019s over 7.8 million people. And yet, only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/data-reports\/workforce\/interactive-data\/figure-18-percentage-all-active-physicians-race\/ethnicity-2018\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">5% of physicians<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/licensed-professional-counselor-jobs\/demographics\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">13% of Licensed Professional Counselors are Black<\/a>.<\/p><p>In higher education, studies by the Journal of Adolescent Health show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/psychiatry\/20180924\/college-students-of-color-more-likely-to-have-unmet-mental-health-needs\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">40% of Black college students<\/a> requested campus health services. But the national trends of representation persist on campus, with only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aucccd.org\/assets\/documents\/Survey\/2019%20AUCCCD%20Survey-2020-05-31-PUBLIC.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">11.7% of staff working at college counseling centers are Black<\/a>. Research shows that Black patients have better results when they are treated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/18\/health\/black-babies-mortality-rate-doctors-study-wellness-scli-intl\/index.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Black medical students and public health workers<\/a>.<\/p><p>And because there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/jan\/15\/being-wealthy-adds-nine-years-to-life-expectancy-says-study\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">direct correlation between health and wealth<\/a>, representation in healthcare leads to better health and fewer medical bills. In other words, more Black doctors mean more Black lives are saved \u2014 and the racial wealth gap shrinks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-d73b586 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"d73b586\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-92f99d9 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"92f99d9\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-0cf1d89 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"0cf1d89\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24730b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24730b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-culture-gap-for-aapi-students-seeking-care\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A culture gap for AAPI students seeking care<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-1258a67 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"1258a67\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-8423a9d ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"8423a9d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-1646e50 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"1646e50\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bff6d1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8bff6d1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since 2000, <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/supporting-aapi-students-and-communities\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)<\/a> college student <a href=\"https:\/\/pnpi.org\/asian-americans-and-pacific-islanders\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">enrollment increased 36%<\/a>, with AAPI students comprising nearly 20% of college students at four-year institutions and 14% of students at two-year institutions. While the AAPI population continues to grow on college campuses across America, research shows that they have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/report\/2019-nsduh-detailed-tables\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">lowest help-seeking rate<\/a> of any of the ethnic groups, with only 2 out of 10 with mental illness receiving treatment.<\/p><p>The cause of this gap is varied and complex, but one significant factor is the disparity between the high need and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pi\/oema\/resources\/ethnicity-health\/asian-american\/psychological-treatment\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">poor availability of linguistically and culturally appropriate mental health service providers<\/a>. Having a more diverse health care provider network can help AAPI students feel supported and seek care they may not have otherwise, resulting in students having improved mental health and well-being.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9270ca3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"9270ca3\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-87d2906 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"87d2906\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5ebf59 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5ebf59\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-impact-of-lack-of-diversity-on-students\"><\/span>The impact of lack of diversity on students<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>The negative risks attributed to the lack of diversity are clear. Whether it is the result of a language barrier, differences in philosophy, cultural differences, or cultural bias, lack of diversity can lead to communication breakdown, and can be especially damaging when it comes to healthcare. When students cannot fully communicate or express their needs, dangerous mistakes can potentially happen.<\/p><p>Lack of diversity can also lead to limited perspective when providing students from diverse backgrounds with physical and mental support. It stunts innovation and creative thinking that could lead to a more effective treatment plan. More importantly, it impedes observations that may affect a student\u2019s health and well-being.<\/p><p>Positive mentorship plays a critical role in the health and well-being of students. Diverse populations of students need the support of faculty and staff to guide them. A lack of diversity can make it difficult for minority students and those from underserved communities to find mentors with whom they identify and from whom they can learn. In turn, this can thwart their academic and social success and ultimately their professional growth, potentially affecting mental, or even physical, health.<\/p><p>Bias on a college campus can also play a role in the health and well-being of college students. Of course, bias does not always have to be explicitly expressed within higher education for it to become a problem. Bias can also impact decisions made for students when it is embedded in the policies and procedures of a college or university. This is referred to as implicit bias. Greater diversity can help stop the destructive effects of implicit bias.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21350af elementor-cta--layout-image-right elementor-cta--skin-classic elementor-animated-content elementor-widget elementor-widget-call-to-action\" data-id=\"21350af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"call-to-action.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div
