In fact, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/news-insights\/telehealth-helps-close-health-care-disparity-gap-rural-areas\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Association of American Medical Colleges<\/a> notes that people living in rural areas received lower-quality health care and had worse health outcomes compared with residents of more populated areas. How can rural-serving institutions (RSIs) of higher education close the mental health support gap?<\/p><p>Identifying rural-serving higher education institutions<br \/>RSIs play a vital role in supporting educational opportunities, social development, and the well-being of rural residents, and communities.<\/p><p>The Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges (ARRC) identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regionalcolleges.org\/project\/ruralserving\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">1,087 rural-serving institutions<\/a> including:\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5fd48c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-progress\" data-id=\"5fd48c9\" communities face a scarcity of resources<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>ARRC data confirms that RSIs serve communities facing socioeconomic disparities. Of the higher education institutions located in low-employment counties, 83% are RSIs. More than two-thirds of the institutions located in persistent poverty counties are RSIs, as are 53% of institutions in persistent child-poverty counties.<\/p><p>With smaller average enrollments and a focus on undergraduate education, RSIs also enroll a greater share of low-income students who receive Federal Government Pell Grants, as well as a higher percentage of Native American\/Alaska Native students. And, the remote nature of rural living typically requires students to travel long distances to meet with clinicians and health care providers for consultation and to receive services.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section
