According to a recent survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/style\/2020-made-americans-even-more-excited-to-practice-self-care-according-to-a-survey\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">two-thirds of people agreed<\/a> that the personal self-care routines they developed during the pandemic have become a permanent part of their daily lives. While that\u2019s true of the general population, higher education leaders need to understand why self-care is important for college students and how to help them develop a self-care plan.<\/p><h2>What is self-care?<\/h2><p>Included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/02-04-2019-self-care-can-be-an-effective-part-of-national-health-systems#:~:text=What%20is%20meant%20by%20%E2%80%9Cself,a%20health%2Dcare%20provider.%E2%80%9D\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">World Health Organization\u2019s definition of self-care<\/a> is \u201cthe ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.\u201d At its core, self-care is simply the practice of looking after your own well-being in ways that prevent poor physical and mental health. Everyone\u2019s self-care needs are different and should be based on determinants specific to their life, such as hereditary health and environment, schedule, habits, interests, stress levels, and more.<\/p><p>Of course, if college students are eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough sleep, they\u2019re already practicing self-care. But sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/self-care-in-college\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">these essential habits<\/a> are not enough for the physical and mental well-being demands of student life. Given the <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/mental-health-support-when-a-tragedy-occurs\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">compounding stress<\/a> of politics, COVID-19 and its variants, war abroad, violence, and tragedies at home, it\u2019s no wonder mental health is suffering in America \u2014 and rampantly among college students.<\/p><h2>Why is self-care important for college students?<\/h2><p>The ups and downs of life \u2014 college life in particular \u2014 can have a huge impact on the health and well-being of students. A self-care routine can equip students to better navigate the inevitable stressors of college life and beyond. Engaging in a self-care routine is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snhu.edu\/about-us\/newsroom\/health\/what-is-self-care\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">clinically proven<\/a> to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, increase happiness, and more. It can help students adapt to change, build strong relationships, and recover from setbacks. Respondents in a national survey cited the benefits of self-care as enhanced self-confidence (64%), increased productivity (67%), and higher levels of happiness (71%). And from a physical health perspective, self-care is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1976131716300184\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">clinically proven to reduce heart disease<\/a>, stroke, and cancer, contributing to better overall well-being.<\/p><p>\u201cCollege students are taught that the next four years [of college] are the ones to look forward to and will someday be the ones they wish to return to,\u201d said Dr. Sharia Hays, Ed.D., Associate Dean at George Fox University. However, by encouraging students to view the college experience with rose-colored glasses, we are setting them up for failure. Students can do key activities to manage their physical well-being. Students can manage their feelings by maintaining support systems, receiving counseling and\/or therapy as needed, journaling, engaging in activities they enjoy, and talking about their feelings in healthy ways. It\u2019s good for students to think through how they\u2019re going to take care of themselves emotionally before they find themselves in the midst of an emotionally-challenging situation. This is one area of life that many college students forget to nurture when stressed, overwhelmed, or faced with difficult circumstances. Cognitive self-care consists of the things we do to take care of our minds and understand ourselves better. Students need to engage in activities that help them feel clear-headed and enable them to participate in academic challenges. Some spiritual self-care practices include prayer, engaging in reflective practices like meditation, getting out in nature, going to worship at a church\/mosque\/temple, and reflecting with a close friend, mentor, or family member for support. It\u2019s essential for students to have a strong support system they can turn to when they\u2019re sick and struggling. Setting up virtual get-togethers, phone calls, or group texts with friends or family can significantly improve mental health and help students feel less alone.<\/li><li><strong>Take care of your body:<\/strong> Maintaining physical health is a crucial factor in keeping students\u2019 minds healthy. Eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet can boost the immune system, lowering the effects of stress on the body. Incorporating exercise with a healthy diet will also help improve their mood by producing endorphins.<\/li><li><strong>Take a break from news and social media:<\/strong> The news is often filled with negativity and stressful information that can affect young adults. It\u2019s important for students to know when to unplug. They can stay informed by checking in from time to time, but shouldn\u2019t overdo it by continuously refreshing social media throughout the day. This can increase feelings of fear and anxiety.<\/li><li><strong>Get outdoors:<\/strong> Not getting enough sunlight can result in a drop in serotonin levels, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/depression\/benefits-sunlight#_noHeaderPrefixedContent\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">directly affects mood<\/a>. Low levels of serotonin can also lead to symptoms of depression. Going outdoors for at least an hour every day allows students to get fresh air and improve their mental well-being.<\/li><li><strong>Stick with daily meditation practices:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/12-benefits-of-meditation\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Meditation<\/a> has been shown to support both mental and physical health, such as lower blood pressure, improved sleep, reduced inflammation, and better pain management.\u00a0Meditation also helps students practice mindfulness and develop relaxation techniques. Various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/health\/mind\/best-meditation-apps\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">free apps, podcasts, and YouTube videos<\/a> can help students get started.<\/li><li><strong>Give yourself permission to cry:<\/strong> At some point, students may feel sad, disheartened, or even hopeless.
