College students <a href=\"https:\/\/formative.jmir.org\/2020\/3\/e15962\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">found electronic support to be consistently<\/a> available at their convenience without concern for coordinating schedules, waitlists, or traveling to a clinic. Students who choose virtual care also have the benefit of avoiding costs for transportation, childcare, or missed work that they would incur from attending an in-person visit.<\/p><p>College students consistently register satisfaction with the usability of telehealth services. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12888-016-1168-z\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">students report<\/a> the convenience, acceptability, and usability of mobile phone apps for mental health interventions \u2013 including those for mindfulness, drinking cessation, depression, health problems, and anxiety \u2013 contribute to higher levels of mental well-being.<\/p><p>Student respondents across a variety of cross-sectional studies consistently describe a high level of satisfaction with telehealth services, including <a href=\"https:\/\/mental.jmir.org\/2017\/2\/e19\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">automated messaging platforms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmir.org\/2018\/4\/e136\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">self-directed therapy platforms<\/a>. Telehealth services offer opportunities for college students to avoid the stigma of seeking mental health treatment. This is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/07448481.2015.1015024\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">obstacle, particularly for minority students<\/a>, who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0165032715307242?via%3Dihub\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">less likely than white students<\/a> to utilize mental health services from primary care professionals despite experiencing similar or elevated rates of markers of mental illness such as suicidality, a suicide attempt, or self-harm.<\/p><p>Telehealth services provide college students with a sense of ownership over their psychological struggles. Survey <a href=\"https:\/\/mental.jmir.org\/2018\/4\/e11467\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">results confirm<\/a> that higher education students feel a sense of control over the pace of the intervention and appreciate the casual nature in which they can receive help virtually compared to receiving in-person help at a counseling center.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/what-college-students-really-think-about-virtual-healthcare\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">benefits of telehealth are clear to students<\/a>: It\u2019s fast, easy, and efficient. Nearly 70% of presidents identified student mental health as their most pressing issue compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acenet.edu\/Research-Insights\/Pages\/Senior-Leaders\/College-and-University-Presidents-Respond-to-COVID-19-2020-Fall-Term.aspx\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">53% in the previous survey<\/a>.<\/p><p>The impact of mental health on student retention is clear. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luminafoundation.org\/news-and-views\/stress-weighs-heavily-on-those-who-remain-in-college-a-new-gallup-lumina-study-finds\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">recent survey by Gallup and the Lumina Foundation<\/a> reported that 76% of four-year undergraduate students who considered dropping out in the past six months said it was due to emotional stress while 63% of associate degree students considered doing the same.
