According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA1108-8.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2023 RAND Report<\/a>, 23% of teachers said they were likely to leave their jobs by the end of the 2022-23 school year.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"teacher-turnover\"><\/span>Teacher turnover<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>K-12 workers have the highest burnout rate of any industry in the United States. A staggering 44% say they &#8220;always&#8221; or &#8220;very often&#8221; feel burned out at work, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/393500\/workers-highest-burnout-rate.aspx\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2022 Gallup Panel Workforce Study<\/a>. College faculty and staff have the second highest rates, following at 35%. Specifically, the report states, \u201cWithin the K-12 employee population, teachers are the most burned out, at 52%.\u201d<\/p><p>Teaching is a rewarding but challenging profession, often with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/taliamilgromelcott\/2024\/03\/09\/would-teacher-salaries-get-there-quicker-if-more-teachers-were-men\/?sh=29815b7448ad\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">lower wages than other public sector jobs<\/a>. Teachers juggle student dynamics, family interactions, and constantly shifting national and state-level policies. <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/post-pandemic-campus-life-student-mental-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">The pandemic exacerbated these challenges<\/a> and introduced new ones. Complicating matters further, many states face contentious political debates over their K-12 curriculum, affecting educators&#8217; relationships with parents and families. Specifically, the turnover rate for Black teachers was 22%, compared to 15% for white teachers in 2022, as reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nais.org\/learn\/independent-ideas\/march-2022\/retaining-teachers-of-color-at-predominantly-white-schools\/#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20National%20Center,concerning%20to%20say%20the%20least.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">National Center for Education Statistics<\/a>. Additionally, Black teachers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA1108-8.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2023 State of the American Teacher Survey<\/a> indicated significantly higher rates of burnout compared to their white counterparts.<\/p><p>Failure to retain teachers costs the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opportunityculture.org\/2022\/02\/21\/losing-our-teachers-high-turnover-shortages-burnout-are-a-problem-for-our-schools-and-children\/#:~:text=The%20Learning%20Policy%20Institute%20estimates,teacher%20who%20leaves%20the%20district.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">$8.5 billion annually<\/a>. According to the Learning Policy Institute, turnover costs school districts between $20,000 and $30,000 per teacher. Calculate your school or district&#8217;s turnover cost using <a href=\"https:\/\/learningpolicyinstitute.org\/product\/the-cost-of-teacher-turnover\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">their calculator.<\/a><\/p><p>Of course, many teachers remain committed to supporting their students and communities. But they need the support of school leaders, including principals, HR administrators, and superintendents, to prevent burnout and support their holistic well-being. Addressing teacher mental health has never been more urgent, especially for K-12 professionals.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"understanding-teacher-burnout\"><\/span>Understanding teacher burnout<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Burnout, as described by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/intl\/blog\/high-octane-women\/201311\/the-tell-tale-signs-of-burnout-do-you-have-them\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Psychology Today<\/a>, is &#8220;a state of chronic stress leading to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness.&#8221; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/getting-serious-about-teacher-burnout\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">National Education Association<\/a> defines it as when &#8220;an educator has exhausted the personal and professional resources necessary for the job.&#8221;<\/p><p>High stress levels in the workplace are a factor leading to teacher burnout. This stress diminishes teachers&#8217; effectiveness, negatively affecting the quality of their instruction, classroom management, and relationships with students. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11218-018-9471-9\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">A study focused on secondary teacher burnout<\/a> revealed the following <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schoolmint.com\/teacher-burnout-why-it-happens-and-how-it-affects-students\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">alarming rates:<\/a><\/p><ul><li>40% experience low levels of personal accomplishment<\/li><li>38% report high levels of depersonalization<\/li><li>28% suffer from severe emotional exhaustion<\/li><\/ul><p>Teachers experiencing burnout find it challenging to build positive relationships with students, deliver lessons, and address individual needs.
