But for many students today, normal setbacks such as a failed exam, a friendship fallout, or a breakup can feel like a breaking point rather than a turning point.<\/p><p>More than one-third of college students now report symptoms of anxiety or depression, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthymindsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2024-2025_HMS-National-Data-Report_Student.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2024-2025 Healthy Minds Study<\/a>. When struggle feels like failure, <strong>belonging suffers. They need campuses that help them <strong>struggle well<\/strong> and <strong>stay enrolled.<\/strong><\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"whats-changed-about-the-student-experience\"><\/span>What\u2019s changed about the student experience?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Today\u2019s students live in a different emotional climate. Even if <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/news\/2025posts\/college-student-mental-health-third-consecutive-year-improvement.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">data shows slightly lower rates<\/a> of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, the tone has shifted.<\/p><p>Simonich described what she\u2019s seeing on her campus, \u201cYou definitely feel maybe a tone of kind of stress and overwhelm. And I would even say confusion.\u201d<\/p><p>Ford sees that confusion, too, and who students are looking to for guidance. \u201cI think they&#8217;re looking for the adults\u2026 to help them lead and or navigate these challenging times.\u201d<\/p><p>In addition to their regular academic pressures, students must navigate:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Political and social <a href=\"https:\/\/news.syr.edu\/2025\/10\/23\/the-great-divide-understanding-us-political-polarization\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">polarization<\/a><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Global conflicts that feel personal<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1488374.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Shifting DEI priorities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/activeminds.org\/resource\/loneliness-resilience-and-mental-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">uncertainty about belonging<\/a><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/nobodys-perfect-helping-students-navigate-achievement-and-academic-excellence\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">Pressure to succeed<\/a> in an unstable world<\/li><\/ul><p>These factors create a baseline of <strong>stress, confusion, and overwhelm.<\/strong> If students don\u2019t know where to turn for help, they may disengage <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/before-the-breaking-point-reimagining-mental-health-support-in-higher-education\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">before reaching a crisis point<\/a>.<\/p><p>Student affairs teams must pay attention to more than utilization metrics. Listening to students\u2019 questions, silence, and emotional temperature is just as critical.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-to-support-belonging-when-dei-feels-unstable\"><\/span>How to support belonging when DEI feels unstable<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Many students, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, hear mixed messages. National headlines may undermine DEI, even as campuses promote inclusion.<\/p><p>Ford named it plainly:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cSome other things that folks may be struggling with is the erosion of diversity initiatives happening on campus\u2026 I think some students are struggling with universities\u2019 ability to navigate what&#8217;s happening politically with diversity, while at the same time trying to affirm to students that we actually value these types of things.\u201d<\/p><p>Simonich sees the tension in the classroom and beyond:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">There\u2019s \u201cgrowing concerns and tension around\u2026 our marginalized populations on campus, and how to support them in having conversations about these very important topics at a time where there&#8217;s a deep sense of taboo or, you know, fear of being canceled or saying the wrong thing or disagreeing.\u201d<\/p><p>Panelists emphasized the need On high-achieving campuses, this can backfire as students overcommit, hide imposter feelings, and\/or burn out silently.<\/p><p>Ford sees the paradox firsthand at Brown:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s often very, very hard or difficult to have students come to this campus and then tell them that they&#8217;re not supposed to work very hard because they&#8217;ve gotten into Brown, and it&#8217;s like, it just doesn&#8217;t compute.\u201d<\/p><p>He describes students who are \u201covercommitted\u201d and \u201cdon&#8217;t know how to say no to something,\u201d even when their bandwidth is gone.<\/p><p>Simonich looks at it through a public health lens:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cAt some point, you gotta learn where is the time and space to, like, make time for yourself, and that doesn&#8217;t mean you don&#8217;t work hard.\u201d<\/p><p>Students often need help understanding and setting boundaries and practicing self-care. Support strategies include:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Challenging all-or-nothing thinking<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Using motivational interviewing to help students recognize when a strategy that once worked has stopped working<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Normalizing recalibration and recovery, whether that means dropping a role, adjusting a course load, or taking a break to focus on health<\/li><\/ul><p>These mindsets help students stay engaged and on track without sacrificing well-being.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"accommodations-and-equity-a-new-normal\"><\/span>Accommodations and equity: A new normal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Colleges are seeing a sharp rise in accommodation requests for mental health.<\/p><p>Simonich shared the numbers from her campus:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIn 2020, [our] small college served only 82 of our students, which was about 4%. And last year and this year, we&#8217;re at about 12%\u2026 that&#8217;s a really different world than it was three, four, five years ago even.\u201d<\/p><p>And the top reason for accommodations may surprise some:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cThe number one reason we&#8217;re serving students in disability services on our campus is for mental health disorders. Learning disorders are actually about the third or fourth reason.\u201d<\/p><p>Ford sees the impact of earlier informal accommodations in K12: teachers who quietly extended deadlines or adjusted expectations for high-achieving students with unaddressed needs.
